One of the most celebrated and well loved of all Great Western locomotive classes, the 57xx 0-6-0 was introduced in 1929. In total, 850 locos were constructed at the railways Swindon Works and the workshops of outside contractors over a period of 21 years. Many improvements and developments were incorporated into the basic design throughout this long period. British Railways constructed the final locomotives. 

They proved to be powerful machines for their modest size, equally at home shunting a single wagon or moving a long train of coaches. The locomotives, with their distinctive Great Western exhaust 'bark' and twin whistles, thrived in all corners of the company's widely dispersed network until progressive replacement by diesels began. By late 1966, all had been forcibly retired. Several locos sold to London Transport in the mid-1950s continued in service until as late as 1971. Sixteen locos have been preserved.
